Villain Movie Review: Mohanlal, The Actor Is Back..!!

Villain is the emotional thriller which features Mohanlal in the lead role. Tamil actor Vishal makes his Mollywood debut by playing the lead antagonist in the movie. Villain is written & directed by B Unnikrishnan and produced by Antony Perumbavoor, under the banner Aashirvad Cinemas.

Villain Story

Mathew Manjooran is a police officer who takes a break from the force after an unexpected tradegy in his personal life. He later re-joins the force, only to quit. But, Manjooran is forced to take over the investigation of a serial murder case, upon the insistence of his senior official.

During his investigation, Manjooran crosses path with Dr. Shathivel Palaniswamy, a man with a dark past and hidden intentions. How Shakthivel influences Mathew Manjooran's investigation, and what happens between the duo forms the crux of the story.

CAST AND CREW

Mohanlal As Mathew Manjooran :

Mohanlal is simply phenomenol as Mathew Manjooran. The actor has delivered his best performance in the recent times, as the aged cop who struggles to get over a personal tragedy. His extraordinary performance, especially in a couple of emotional sequences, will definitely give you goosebumps. We are happy to welcome back the actor in Mohanlal, after a very long break.

Script & Direction:

B Unnikrishnan B Unnikrishnan, the writer-director has helmed an out-and-out emotional thriller. He has succeeded in brininging out the best from his actors, thus making Villian rich with some extraordinary performances. But the movie definitely has its own flaws. The lack of an innovative storyline, absence of freshness in the making style, and the lack of clarity at certain points of the narrative are the major drawbacks. The screenplay doesn't provide enough space for all the characters, as some of them are totally wasted.

Vishal As Dr. Shakthivel Palaniswamy:

Vishal, the popular Tamil actor has made a great debut in Malayalam, by the essaying the character Dr. Shakthivel Palaniswamy to near perfection. The actor simply excelled with his perfect dialogue delivery and amazing performance, especially in the face-off scenes with Mohanlal.

Manju Warrier As Neelima Mathew :

Manju Warrier is just wonderful as Neelima, Mathew Manjooran's loving wife. Even though she has a very limited screenspace, the actress delivered a brilliant performance in the movie, especially in the emotional sequences. Her exceptional chemistry with Mohanlal is an absolute treat to watch.

Hansika Motwani As Sreya :

Hansika Motwani makes a decent debut by playing the role of Shakthivel's love interest, Sreya. She makes a mark with her matured performance and impressive dialogue delivery. The actress could have been utilised better in the movie.

Raashi Khanna As Harshita Chopra:

Raashi Khanna has also made a decent debut, by delivering a decent performace as Harshita Chopra, a young cop. But her character was left behing in the movie after a point, which is disappointing.

The Supporting Cast :

Telugu actor Srikanth was totally wasted in his not so important role. The rest of the star Siddique, Renji Panicker, Aju Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Idavela Babu, Kottayam Nazeer, Balaji Sharma, Vishnu Govindan, Antony Perumbavoor, etc., have essayed their respective roles to near perfection.

Cinematography: Manoj Paramahamsa :

Manoj Paramahamsa, the renowned cinematographer makes his Mollywood debut as the DOP of Villain. The cinematographer has totally succeeded in making the movie an absolute visual treat. As we all know, Villain is the first ever 8K movie of Indian cinema.

Music: 4 Musics & Sushin Shyam :

The songs composed by the 4 Musics band are just okay. The Kandittum Kandittum song, which is sung by Dr. KJ Yesudas, is a treat to watch in theatres. The background score composed by The Great Father fame, Sushin Shyam is brilliant, and creates the perfect mood for the emotional thriller.

Editing: Shameer Mohammed :

Shameer Mohammed, the editor has done a good job with the movie, with moves forward through a non-linear narrative. But, the slowpace might not impress the audiences who expect a racy thriller.

Verdict :

Villain might not satisfy the audiences, who expect a nail-biting theatre experience. But is undoubtedly an impressive emotional thriller. Watch it for the magnificent performances of Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, and Vishal.
